Besides the large amount of interesting information, you will find more than 150 high and low resolution images (300 dpi or 72dpi). From the far right to inter-cultural dialogue – the astonishing transformation of a Geneva cop who has established a unique integration and mediation scheme. This project would never have got off the ground without the efforts of a Franco-Tunisian woman community worker and the support of a police colleague with a degree in education.

A documentary on the tragic fate of an alpine cheese-maker. (55 min) (1 copy)

This is Robert Guillet’s 54th season on the high alpine pastures.  His last season.  Victim of speculation, this alpine cheese-maker has become a farmer without land.  He has neither property nor cattle to pass on to his son Benoit.

ID Swiss is a documentary in seven episodes.  The personal and subjective points of view

of several Swiss filmmakers of the younger generation from an exciting kaleidoscope documenting encounters between different cultures in Switzerland.

 

1.8. Vineyard Chronicle* – French version with English, Spanish or German subtitles (83 min)

How are grapes transformed into wine?  This film follows a family of wine-growers through the four seasons of a wine-growing year, describing the work, the joys and the worries of the Potterat family of Cully, who are wine-growers and cellar-men.  Three generations working together and upholding traditions.

 

1.9 Customs and Traditons in Switzerland* – English version (6 copies) (155 min)

As the months succeed each other through the year, the different folk customs come round again.  Each one signals its particular season just as the first primrose signals the advent  of spring.  May people enjoy folk customs and are happy to support hem, some actively as participants, others passively as spectators.  This DVD illustrates the diversity of Swiss customs and traditions with a selection of films and a number of articles and pictures.

 

2.0  Direct Democracy* English version (6 copies), (54 min.)

Direct democracy is a well established part of the Swiss political system. Voters have a range of rights which give them a direct influence on policies at every level. Citizens who want to put forward proposals of their own or who object to legislation already passed by Parliament can use the popular initiative and the referendum to oblige the authorities to put the issue to the people as a whole. This DVD explains the Swiss political system, the different types of popular rights and how they work in practice, and also looks at possible future development.

 

2.1 Environmental Protection in Switzerland* - English, Spanish, 219 min. (2 copies)

 The protection of nature and the environment is one of the most important tasks facing the Swiss state and is also one of the priorities of Swiss foreign policy. Laws and economic incentives have brought about improvements in many areas. Where has Swiss environmental policy been successful, where has it reached its limits, and what is the country doing to meet the challenges of the 21st century?

 

2.2  The Gotthard* - German, subtitled in English, Spanish, French, 101 min. (1 copy)

Two films: Under the Gotthard massif the longest railroad tunnel of the world is under construction – one of the most important European traffic routes of the future (57 km long). “The Tunnel” takes us to construction sites and shows us the life of the tunnel builders. The second film “The Gotthard” is an extraordinary trip over the legendary Gotthard Pass and into its history.

 

2.3  The Way I Look At You* - French, subtitled in Engish, Spanish and German, 51 min. (1 copy)

The story of five encounters, comic and tragic at the same time, confined in an automobile of a driving school. Five couples are united on the way to obtaining a driver’s license, but separated by nationality and sometimes by the colour of their skin.

 

2.4  Education, Research & Innovation (2005)* - English, 49 min. (1 copy)

Switzerland is an attractive country for education and research. It has a broad range of nstitutions providing education from kindergarten level to post-graduate study. Swiss universities and private institutes are extensively involved in research – many scientific achievements have come from Swiss researchers. This DVD uses specific examples to give a survey of education, research and innovation in Switzerland.

1.1   Erlebnis Bernina (Bernina Adventure) – English Version (1999) (30 min)

Palü, Bernina, and Roseg are the three most famous peaks of the Bernina group of mountains.  The route through the Bernina peaks via the Bianco ridge and the traverse of Palü from west to east are among the highlights of this film, which features not only the well-known peaks, but also valleys with fine-sounding names.

 

1.2  Heidi Forever – English Version (52 min)

In 1880 Johanna Spyri created the character of Heidi.  A century later, the little shepherdess went round the world.  Her fans talk about thoughts on the values of friendship and family.  Her enemies claim that this story is silly.  Heidi’s portrait is made of footage, photos, interviews, illustrations and comics.  It consists of quick sequences, passing from information to entertainment, exhibiting the most famous characteristics of the young girl.

1.4  Genève – au fil de l’eau – English Version (1996) (25 min)

Born of the lake and the river Rhone, like a bridge on moving waters, its vocation clearly derived from its privileged geographic position: Geneva is a city of trade and communication, a city dedicated to openness and hospitality.  A portrait of a cosmopolitan, international city.

 

1.5  Faszination Demokratie (fascination with democracy) English Version (30 min)

The film provides insights into the opportunities for lively participation in the political processes that are available to children and adolescents in Switzerland.  It highlights the political commitment of a number of young people and shows the political consequences of democratic decision-making. 

 

1.6  Faszination Dampf (fascination with steam) English Version (30 min)

The machine age began some 250 years ago, leading to a technical revolution that was to change people’s lives all over the world.  It was mainly due to a Briton who patented a machine that was to replace both human muscle and horse power: James Watt, the designer of the first practicable steam engine.

 

1.7  Ambri Piotta – English Version (31 min)

Since the late 1930’s the small mountain village of Ambri-Piotta is devoted to the spectacular sport of ice hockey.  The success and the everlasting passion for this sport border on the miraculous.  The Hockey-Club Ambri-Piotta has played almost without interruption in the highest division of Swiss ice hockey and is now one of the most successful and admired teams.

*)  2.3)   Schellenursli - A Bell for Ursli                   length 19’   (1965)

From the picture book by Selina Chönz and Alois Carigiet. A story without words inspired by an ancient custom from the Graubünden: with the return of spring, the children of the village chase out winter with bells, rattles and whip cracking. Ursli is disappointed with the little bell which he has been given. He then remembers a large bell up on the alpine pasture, and without delay he sets out to look for it. His way lets us discover the countryside and the flora and fauna of the Graubünden. Meanwhile in the village people are worried at the disappearance of the small boy. Welcomed with enthusiasm on his return, Ursli is to lead the procession with the largest bell.

 

2.5)   Salute to Switzerland                                  (e)        length 43’   (1988)

This film was produced by CBS Atlanta and presents historical and institutional aspects of Switzerland, as well as the economical and cultural life in our country, and highlights tourist attractions.

 

3.1)   Schwingen (The Swiss Way of Wrestling)  (e)         length 26’   (1987)

Traditional Swiss sports are introduced with pictures from the Swiss Wrestling and Herdsmen Festival of 1986. Swiss Wrestling (Schwingen), Hornussen (a rural ball and bat game) and Stone Throwing (the Unspunnen stone weights some 184 lbs) belong to the program just as well as the alphorn, yodeling, flag twirling and national costumes ... A wonderful experience.

Themes and motifs from Beethoven’s 6th Symphony, known as the ‘Pastoral’, lend musical unity to breathtaking aerial views of the varying Swiss landscapes of the Jura, The Plateau, the Alps and the Ticino.

This is not a film about architecture. It is the portrait of a Swiss artist at work. An artist who considers himself, primarily, as an artisan and who, citing Max Frisch, says that above all one must be aware that to create is more important than the creation itself.

7.7)   Surviving the Big One: How to prepare for a Major Earthquake     (e)  length 58’   (1989)

Living near a faultline means living with earthquakes. The earth’s landscapes are shaped by forces that inevitably produce major disasters. According to Henry Johnson, Los Angeles City firefighter and earthquake preparedness expert, a little knowledge and preparation can dramatically increase your ability to protect both your property and your life. Johnson visits major earthquake sites from California to Alaska and shows how the key to survival is knowing what to do before, during and after a major quake. The Big One is coming - the only question is when!

9.4 Ballenberg             (e)

Ballenberg is a living museum of Switzerland’s rural traditions.  It not only reconstructs houses and cottages to look exactly like they did centuries ago, it actually brings them back to life.  Here people bake bread, milk cows, produce wool, and cut the grass with scythes the way ancestors did.  It is a place where historical traditions and customs  -- which are, in a sense, the roots of Swiss federalism – are kept alive.
