It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father and grandfather Gordon, in Vernon. Gordon was born in Gersau, Switzerland, the eldest son of Gottfried and Agnes Camenzind, and the first of eleven children. Gordon served in the Swiss Army during the Second World War. He trained as a Chef in Switzerland and immigrated to Canada in 1948 to work for Canadian Pacific Hotels. Gordon was a chef in numerous CP Hotels across Canada before settling in Vancouver in 1953.
It was in Vancouver that he met his wife, Joyce Read. They were married in 1954 and moved to Vernon shortly thereafter, where they owned a small corner store. In 1956 they purchased a farm in
Coldstream and that same year, their only son, Bill was born. Gordon worked the farm until 1973 and then retired farming to return to his profession as a sous chef at the Capri Hotel in Kelowna. A few years later he worked as a sous chef at the Village Green in Vernon. In 1986, Gordon hung up his professional chef’s hat and returned to hobby farming. He was predeceased by his wife, Joyce, in December of 1996. In the year 2000, Gordon sold his farm and moved into Coldstream Meadows. He enjoyed his daily “half-a-cigar” walks. His other pleasures were reading, watching boxing, and listening to classical music. Over the years Gordon made a number of trips back to Switzerland, including a trip in 1998 with his son Bill, and his grandsons, Alex and Ross.
In the summer of 2008 Gordon moved into Creekside Landing where he resided until his passing. Gordon is survived by his son, Bill (Deb), and his grandsons, Alex and Ross, as well as four siblings and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews in Switzerland.
A graveside remembrance of Gordon’s life will be held at the Coldstream Cemetery on Saturday, March 12th, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements will be made through the Vernon Funeral Home.
